Well, if you had asked my mother when I started
drawing she would of said I was born with a pencil in
my hand. But we all know that's not true- though I can
say, I can't recall when I didn't have a pencil in my
hand. From as far back as I can remember, art has
always been a part of what made me. If I wasn't
watching cartoons on TV, I was drawing them.
Fascinated by dinosaurs and monsters as a child,
some of my first art attempts were drawing dinosaurs.
I always and still have trouble drawing people, so I
was more comfortable drawing what I loved most-
animals. I remember back in 2nd or 3rd grade, my
mother had let me get a book on how to draw animals
from the Scholastic book fair. This became my
earliest remembrance of how to draw and it became
my bible on art. It was by
Ed Emberley called The
Little Drawing Book of Animals
published in 1970
by Brown. The edition I had was a bit different from
the image shown and it has since been reprinted. You
can occasionally find the first edition on ebay, as I
have recently for my young son. Mr. Emberley has
many wonderful books on how to draw for the young
and I recommend them all.  I don't know what new
material is in this edition, as I have not seen it. Either
way, to learn to draw we must understand that all
things are made up of shapes. Once a child learns to
'see' the shapes in things, then they are ready for the
next level of training!

I'm often asked as an artist, how I learned to draw? We'll for me it was
natural -something I was gifted with. Everyone has the ability to do art
in some form. I'm also asked by lots of parents, How can I help my
child learn? What can I do to help them draw? Welcome to the
How
To Draw
area! A place where I will have some information and HOW
TO's for kids. As well as advise for parents on how to let their little
Picasso's shine!  -Kelley
